Usually, when you think “letdown” in terms of sports wagering, you think football. Every once in awhile, though, the theory can apply to baseball, and tonight is one of those “once in a whiles.” In case you missed it, my Dodgers over the weekend went up to the Bay Area and punked the hated Giants, sweeping a three-game series (including consecutive shutouts Saturday and Sunday) to cap a 7-3 road trip and move into a first-place tie with San Francisco. Now L.A. comes home, probably feeling alittle too good about things, to open a series against the third-place D-Backs.
Two additional reasons to like Arizona tonight: It has won nine of 14, and Trevor Cahill is on the mound. Yes, Cahill is just 8-9 with a 3.86 ERA, and yes he’s got just two quality starts in his last seven trips to the hill. But the right-hander has dominated the Dodgers twice this season, giving up just four runs in 13 innings (2.77 ERA). Most notable about those two starts is they occurred in Phoenix, where Cahill has struggled this year (4.87 ERA vs. 2.91 ERA on the road). Behind Cahill is a bullpen that also has fared much better on the road (2.57 ERA), and over the last 10 games, those Arizona relievers have a 2.49 ERA. Finally, the D-Backs arrive in L.A. having taken three in a row and four of five from the Dodgers, who have lost eight of 13 at home. (And from the “for-the-record” department”: I’ve won 12 of my last 15 selections.)
