Finding Nemo 3-D

(G) ★★★★☆

This is not just another 3-D conversion; it’s an encore of modern animation’s gold standard. Clown fish Nemo (Alexander Gould) rebels from his overprotective dad (Albert Brooks) and winds up trapped in a dentist’s aquarium. Dad sets out to find his son with the help of an absent-minded blue tang named Dory (Ellen DeGeneres). Along the way, there are vegetarian sharks, surfer-dude sea turtles and the tank full of mentors (Willem Dafoe, Brad Garrett, Allison Janney). The conversion is all in the details, and this beautiful movie gets even better.

A Long Walk on the Wild Side

By Chantal Corcoran

Back in February, when Cheryl Strayed last appeared in Las Vegas (she spoke on a panel about female novelists for UNLV’s Black Mountain Institute), nobody had really heard of her. She had a well-received but largely unknown novel, Torch (Houghton Mifflin, 2006). She had a week previously relinquished her anonymity as (unpaid) advice columnist Dear Sugar for the online magazine, The Rumpus. And she had a memoir, Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail (Knopf, $26) that was a month away from being published.
