It remains the most renowned bomb to explode in the Silver State since the Nevada Test Site stopped atmospheric nuclear testing in 1962. Of course, we’re talking about the car bomb that nearly killed Frank “Lefty” Rosenthal outside Tony Roma’s restaurant on Sahara Avenue. Oct. 4 marks the 30th anniversary of that infamous incident, memorialized in the opening and closing scenes of Martin Scorsese’s Casino.
In recognition of the anniversary, here is a YouTube clip of a 1977 episode of The Frank Rosenthal Show, the TV show hosted by Rosenthal and taped at the Stardust hotel-casino. Despite its low-budget production, Rosenthal got numerous A-list celebrities, including Muhammad Ali, Bob Hope and Liberace, to appear on the show. Rosenthal is joined by Frank Sinatra and Don Rickles in this six-minute clip, which ends abruptly in the middle of the conversion, but gives you enough of a taste to realize Rosenthal, who died in 2008, might have been the worst TV talk-show host ever. Yes, even worse than Chevy Chase.
