End of Watch

(R) ★★★☆☆

Officers Taylor and Zavala (Jake Gyllenhaal, Michael Pena) are good friends and valiant protectors of the people. Episodically, the movie follows them as they crisscross paths with an encroaching drug cartel and its street soldiers. Many dead bodies and grisly sights ensue. Taylor falls for the newfound love of his life, played by Anna Kendrick. Shot in relentless first-person style, the film is like Xbox reconfigured for the movies. There is plenty of suspense here, but not the strongest.

Since playing at the Book & Stage last November, Grouplove has been performing to ever-bigger crowds. With the success of their 2011 debut album, Never Trust A Happy Song, came prime slots at major festivals (such as Coachella and Bonnaroo), and appearances on late-night television (including the Late Show With David Letterman and Jimmy Kimmel Live). This time around the L.A.-based indie-rockers return to Vegas to play a larger venue and close out the Cosmopolitan’s Boulevard Social Club concert series.
