The Get Back celebrates 10 years

Long before the Fremont East entertainment district was a hipster haven, with awesome bars every 10 feet, a little monthly party was a destination for music lovers during First Friday. Ten years later, the Get Back is still going strong in its home at Beauty Bar, and it celebrates a decade of dope beats at 10 p.m. Oct. 5.

The Get Back sprung from DJ John Doe’s desire to play more than just the safe, watered-down club tracks that dominate nightclubs on the Strip. Fast-forward to 2012, and his vision is still going strong.

“Most clubs or parties don’t last half as long without changing formats,” Doe says. “I’d like to think that it’s done a lot for downtown nightlife in general, musically and, more importantly, helped develop the scene. I think it’s done a lot for other DJs, too, who get to play a wider range of music than what they might be able to do at other locations.”

In addition to seasoned local spinners such as Phoreyz, Aurajin and 8-bit, the Get Back has also welcomed guest DJs Z-Trip, DJ P, Nu-Mark of Jurassic 5, Rich Medina, Nickodemus and Shortkut. For the 10-year anniversary, Melo-D of the World-Famous Beat Junkies will return as the headliner.

So, can we look forward to another 10 years of the Get Back? “As long as it continues to be fun, I’ll continue to keep it going,” Doe says. “It’s basically almost the same as the day we started it: A come-as-you-are, nitty-gritty funky soul dance party.” – Deanna Rilling
