Hair-Raising

Don't be alarmed by these fashionably entombed mummies stalking the halls of the Artisan Hotel; they're entitled to a glamorous getaway just like everyone else

Get the Look

It took six stylists five hours to transform our couple from photogenic modern folks to ancient mummies. Eschewing traditional bandages, faux hair was used to mummify the models. Replicate the look using colored hair, a body suit and vintage-inspired accessories.

Wrap It Up

† You have to wear something under all that hair, so start with a flesh-colored body suit such as one from American Apparel. 740 S. Rampart Blvd., 851-7474; AmericanApparel.net.

† Place adhesive tape on the torso and arms as a base for the hair to stick to.

† Wrap gray, white and black synthetic hair intermittently around the body and secure the layers together using hairpins until the entire suit is covered. Hair Plus Beauty Supply, 1048 N. Rancho Drive, Suite A, 646-0656.

Go for Decorative Drama

† Darken eyebrows and apply heavy eyeliner to highlight the only visible skin.

† We covered our mummies’ mouths, but a bold red lip stands out against all that monochromatic hair.

Window Dressings

† The baroque backdrop lends itself to vintage-inspired accessories for a turn-of-the-century monster vibe.

† While the hair is the standout, an ornate headpiece or fur shrug adds texture to the look.

† Don’t skimp on the shoes—the higher and more elaborate the better.

An Island Escape

By Melinda Sheckells

I love a quick getaway and one of my favorite places to go, whether driving or flying, is Newport Beach. Aside from the obvious benefits such as a fantastic climate, it also has a local airport in Santa Ana that is easy to get in and out of. I can’t tell you how many times I have boarded a flight in 110-plus degree temperatures and less than 48 minutes gate-to-gate have been at a perfectly chill 75. When I hit town there are always a couple places I head to first. Where I Stay
