Look Up to Lowbrow Art

Have a taste for pop surrealism and dive bars? From 6-10 p.m. Oct. 26 you can get both at the fifth installment of Raise the Roof, a “ceiling art gallery” event that takes place every last Friday at Dino’s Lounge (1516 Las Vegas Blvd. South).

Phillip Limon, owner of Cornerstone Gallery, and co-curator Jayo select four local artists to paint four standard drywall tiles taken from the bar’s ceiling. At Raise the Roof, they unveil a transformed tile every hour and permanently reinstall it in the bar. What to expect of this art event? “It’s welcoming, it’s inviting and it’s old-school,” Limon says. “The project consists of approximately 90 tiles and will take until winter 2013 to complete.”

This month’s featured artists are Aaron Neiman and Anthony Ortega of Heritage Tattoos, as well as Tommy Altman and Chance Gomez of Red Handed Tattoo Gallery. Outside, King Ruck of Slum Beautiful mural company will throw up live graffiti. Inside, DJ Magic will spin a mix of hip-hop, rock and throwback jams as visual artist Christian Wiltse live-paints on a canvas that will be raffled at the night’s end. Bar tabs, tattoo gift certificates, lowbrow art originals, prints and T-shirts will be raffled as well.
