A sports fan’s most important gadget these days isn’t a 55-inch, 3-D television or a sleek computer—it’s a smartphone. And for UNLV diehards, following the Rebels on an iPhone or Android is going to be easier (and more addictive) this season.
The school recently introduced a free mobile app, UNLV Athletics, that provides news and score updates directly from UNLV’s official athletics site, UNLVRebels.com, as well as photos, schedules and Twitter streams.
But the big-ticket feature is the live video and audio streaming of games. Video and audio isn’t free—users must purchase a subscription to add live media ($4.99 per month or $19.99 per year for iOS users; $9.99 annually for Android users). The application can be downloaded on your phone via the App Store or Google Play Store by searching for “UNLV Athletics.”
Live video is subject to broadcast rights, so certain games that are already being televised will not be available to watch through the app. That will affect men’s basketball the most, but other sports should be widely available through the app. For men’s basketball games that are blacked out, live audio will be available for every contest.
If your goal is finding a way to watch men’s basketball on your mobile device, you might want to wait until the availability schedule is released before dropping the extra money on the live-media subscription. But for fans of all UNLV sports, the free app is definitely worth the download.
