Welcome to the world of high stakes recruiting.
UNLV received some bad news on Friday when California high school star Isaac Hamilton chose to attend UTEP, leaving the Rebels among the wreckage with the rest of the runners-up.
It was a tough blow for UNLV, as Dave Rice and his staff believed they were the front-runners as recently as last weekend, when Hamilton was in town for an official visit. And Hamilton’s decision is especially painful because his younger brother, Daniel, is also an elite recruit in the Class of 2014. The pair are commonly believed to be a package deal, which means UTEP will likely pick up a commitment from Daniel as well.
Isaac Hamilton kept his decision under wraps until the moment of truth, making his announcement live on ESPNU. Now the Rebels have to get back on the horse.
With one scholarship left to fill for next year, UNLV isn’t done recruiting.
The Rebels are still in the race for some of the country’s best
players, including New Jersey forward Jermaine Lawrence, who has UNLV in
his final four.
