Freshman center Anthony Bennett did not practice on Monday due to back issues, according to coach Dave Rice. It is unknown whether he’ll be able to play in Wednesday’s game against UC-Irvine.
Bennett, the team’s leading scorer at 19.5 points per game, has had recurring back problems in the past. He missed games in each of his last two years at Findlay Prep with a similar issue.
Monday’s practice was closed to the media, but afterward Rice confirmed that Bennett was held out to receive treatment from the team’s medical staff. Rice said the team doesn’t know many details at the moment, but Bennett will receive more treatment tomorrow.
In addition to leading the Rebels in scoring, Bennett is also second in rebounding (8.3 per game), first in blocks (2.3) and fourth in minutes (26.3). He has started all four games this season; if he’s unable to go on Wednesday, senior Quintrell Thomas would likely get the start in his place.
