Keep Your Skin Happy in Cold Weather

silkcoat1.jpgEvery local knows Las Vegas can get frigid. Exposure to harsh elements—wind, cold air and indoor heaters—can leave skin dry and irritated. But by following a few tips, you can protect your skin and maintain a healthy glow throughout winter.

• Apply sunscreen. As the adage goes, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Even on cloudy days, sunscreen is one of the best anti-aging defenses and essential year-round for healthy skin.

• Moisturize. When it comes to moisturizer in the winter, oil-based is better than water-based. Oil creates a protective layer on the skin that retains more moisture, which is needed in the dry winter months. Apply while the skin is still damp, just a few minutes after getting out of the shower or bath. Try PCA Skin Silkcoat Balm (pictured below) available at my office.

• Avoid hot showers and baths. It’s hard not to dream of a long, hot bath on a cold winter day, but bathing in hot water breaks down the lipid barriers in the skin, causing loss of moisture. It’s better to take lukewarm showers or baths and stay in the water for a shorter period of time. Your skin will thank you later.
