New year, same old need for blood. January is National Volunteer Blood Donor Month, and there are opportunities to donate all over town, including the Evil Dead the Musical blood drive Jan. 4, Canyon Ridge Christian Church Jan. 12, the Sahara Library Jan. 19 and many others. Check for a full list or to schedule an appointment.

Friday, Jan. 4

Mothers of the world unite! And then get over to the Flamingo for MommyCon Mini, a one-day convention dedicated to issues moms know well: breast-feeding, child birth, child safety, etc. This one is just a preview for MommyCon, a weekend-long event scheduled for this time next year.

Saturday, Jan. 5

The Flamingo is a busy place this weekend; it’s also hosting the World Series of Beer Pong, which is now apparently a professional sport. This championship series, in fact, includes a $50,000 grand prize. The playoffs started Jan. 1, so it’s down to the really good teams.

Sunday, Jan. 6

You probably know Cirque du Soleil employees are talented performance artists. What you may not realize is that their creativity doesn’t stop at work, as evidenced by Parade: The Collective, a new exhibit of painting, photography, sculpture and other art from Cirque employees. Opened Jan. 4 and runs through Jan. 25 at Trifecta Gallery in the Arts Factory Downtown.

Monday, Jan. 7

Time for an annual basketball rivalry not to be missed: the Big City Showdown pitting high school powerhouses Bishop Gorman and Findlay Prep against one another in this display of monster hoops prowess. Last year’s game sold out, so check early to get your tickets.

Tuesday, Jan. 8

(In our best crooner voice): There she is, Miss America! Yes, that’s right ladies and gentlemen, the Miss America Pageant returns to Planet Hollywood, today through Saturday. One of these 53 lovely, talented ladies will be crowned Miss America. Nightly at 8 through Jan. 12,
