Concert Review: Imagine Dragons

It seems like yesterday that this local band was performing at small Downtown venues. Fast forward a few years, and Imagine Dragons’ positive trajectory has lead them all the way to a sold-out show in front of four thousand people on a tour bearing the same name as their gold-certified debut release, Night Visions.

After flying over the audience on a large swing during “On Top of the World,” lead vocalist Dan Reynolds said, “I’m like a little boy up here. I’ve always wanted to do that—only in Vegas.” The deafening sounds of adolescent female screams before, during and after each song was reminiscent of Beatlemania and yet another example of the band’s quick rise to stardom.

Imagine Dragons, who are known for their percussive heavy sets, had several large drums accompanying them onstage, which various band members would play. During their latest single, “Radioactive,” Reynolds and bassist Ben McKee both played each side of a large drum for an extended breakdown. For their soon-to-be-released single, “Demons,” Reynolds told the audience that the band was filming for a video, and there was no better place to shoot then in their hometown.

Reynolds reminisced: “I remember our first gig in Vegas and to look at all of you now, I can’t describe the feeling. All I can say is thank you my friends, thank you. We will always remember this night, I promise.” With that, the Dragons wrapped up the set with their first single “It’s Time.” Our local guys were truly are on top of the world, and this was one show their fans won’t soon forget, either. ★★★★☆

A foggy, soggy, bottom-heavy set by Vegas’ reefer-saddened Demon Lung nearly brought me down. Thank Lucifer for Castle. The San Francisco occult-metal band—despite a sub drummer and power-trio format—stormed the Bunkhouse. Guitarist Mat Davis’ beat-to-shit Les Paul, powered by an ear-trampling Marshall 100-watt amplifier, erected staggering architectures of sound. His unusual, technical, often angular riffs impressed even the indie-rocker I dragged to the show.
