Tony’s Tools of the Trade, Epic Comes to Vegas and Bold Indian Beer

vodka-distilled-cover-art.jpg• The only thing better than a new line of bar tools endorsed by cocktail expert Tony Abou-Ganim is a line designed by Tony Abou-Ganim. Launching in March, Modern Mixologist Barware is a visually stunning suite of elegant, modern, professional-grade pieces. The Italian-made crystal beaker and mixing glass complement the three-piece cocktail shaker, called a cobbler. But it’s the thoughtful details—the subtle, ergonomic dimple where your fingers should land on the Hawthorne and julep cocktail strainers, and the perfect 25-degree angle on the mixing spoons—that make this set (about $170) the first any aspiring home mixologist will want and the last a professional bartender will ever need.

• It’s official: Epic Brewing Co. has confirmed that the Salt Lake City-based brewery’s beers (and they are epic!) will launch in Nevada on March 7 at Aces & Ales—21 Epic beers on tap, including Capt’n Crompton’s Pale Ale, Intermountain Wheat, Pfeifferhorn Lager, Spiral Jetty IPA, Hopulant IPA, Brainless on Peaches, Sour Apple Saison, Rio’s Rompin Rye, Imperial IPA, Utah Sage Saison (limited) and the biggie, Big Bad Baptist, also limited. Look for these and other brews soon in liquor stores and on menus. Epic will also participate in the Brew’s Best beer fest (, March 9 at Lake Las Vegas.

• Speaking of beer, I got a visit last week from an old friend, Suhel Jagtiani, who in addition to his night job as a DJ, is also a partner by day in 1947 Premium Lager, a beer specifically designed to pair with the rich, bold flavors found in Indian cuisine. It’s become an annual tradition for Jagtiani to hand off a supply of 1947 to me over dinner, and this year was no different. (Thank you, Indian Restaurant Manager, for looking the other way.) Remember 1947 next time you’re scarfing saag paneer and chicken tikka masala in or around Manhattan.
