CD Reviews: Kid Cudi, Ghostface Killah & Adrian Younge and Wiz Khalifa & Curren$y

Experimental Rap

Kid Cudi, Indicud (Republic Records)

Kid Cudi crafts music that defies the norm. Having separated himself from Kanye West’s G.O.O.D. Music camp, Mr. Solo Dolo is really a solo act. Indicud is Cudi doing what he does without his previous depressed vibe. The MGMT sample-driven “Immortal” rises above his daily concerns with self-assured vocals. But Cudi controls every aspect of Indicud, hindering its reach. Experimental “Unfuckwittable” and “Mad Solar” end up excessive. But aside from a few faults, Cudi will please fans with Indicud. ★★★☆☆

A Hip-Hop Musical

Ghostface Killah & Adrian Younge, 12 Reasons To Die (Soul Temple Records)

Ghostface is a colorful MC. With composer Adrian Younge’s music for 12 Reasons to Die, the Wu Tang member takes a leap into pulp narrative. Powered by Younge’s lush backdrops, he weaves the tale of Tony Starks and his war with the DeLucas, while maintaining his rhyme style. “An Unexpected Call (The Set Up)” is smooth, with smacking drums and sparse organs. Throughout, there’s Ghostface’s murderous lyrical carnage. Some may be thrown by its cinematic vibe, but when you’re Ghostface, you may as well leave no stone unturned as an MC. ★★★☆☆

Weed Rap

Wiz Khalifa & Curren$y, Live in Concert (Self Released)

It’s no secret that Wiz Khalifa and Curren$y love to get high. Why not give fans an entire project to which they can smoke marijuana? Live in Concert is light on substance, but Bobbi Humphrey samples the soulful backdrops that are heavy. The weed-loving MCs do what they do best. Lyrically, Curren$y is a step ahead of Wiz. However, the duo sound oh-so-cool on the smooth “For Her” and the “Sweeter Than Sugar”-sampled “Revenge and Cake.” Those looking for lyrical wizardry and trunk-rattling beats are advised to look elsewhere. But if you’re in the mood to light one up and zone out, Live in Concert is right up your alley. ★★★☆☆
