In Henderson, Everyone’s Along for the Ride

New festival Crazy Spokes aims to get families cycling

In the race to establish themselves as bike-friendly communities—and thus win fans and funding for things like health programs and road improvements—local municipalities have donned an array of personas: You’ve got your toned, speedy Summerlin road biker, your hip, laid-back Downtown commuter and, now, your fun-loving Henderson family of cyclists.

Crazy Spokes, scheduled for October 12 at Henderson’s Mission Hills Park, promises to be as much a festival as a ride. It even includes an all-ages parade for decorated bikes. (Henderson creatives: Start planning now.) Of course, there’s some grit involved in the grown-up rides: Any trek encompassing part of the River Mountains Loop Trail is bound to include some killer hills. Still, the 30- and 60-mile options at Crazy Spokes are gentle compared with the 100-plus mile distances of Tour de Summerlin and Viva Bike Vegas.

That should leave plenty of energy for an afternoon of family activities. Even the weather promises to be milder for the Henderson ride, which snagged the ideal October time frame when Viva Bike Vegas moved to September to coincide with Interbike, the bike-shop biz’s big annual trade show at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center.
