Trainers are increasingly passing on treadmills and weight machines, and using tractor tires and wobble boards in their place. Functional fitness integrates different types of movement to imitate and improve upon real-world actions. The goal is to make people stronger, faster and more balanced in their day-to-day lives. So, rather than sitting at a rowing machine for 30 minutes, for instance, you might sit on a bench and use hand-weights, imitating a secretary pulling and pushing file drawers. Rather than bench-pressing, you might do squats while lifting a weight—as if it’s that heavy laptop bag you haul around all day. So long, Nautilus; hello, medicine ball!
