Study after study shows that if you teach kids to read in early childhood, they’ll have a better chance at succeeding with the rest of their education—and career. With a school district as busy as Clark County’s, a nonprofit devoted to putting books in the hands and homes of at-risk kids is paying attention to what a community needs. Spread the Word Nevada collects and distributes books, provides kids with volunteer reading mentors and hosts storytelling events. Founded by educators Laurie Hartig and Lisa Habighorst, Spread the Word has reached 325,000 students since 2001. You can help by hosting a book drive, becoming a storyteller or being a mentor.
