Downtown has a new star in its ever brighter dining constellation. Joe Vicari, a Michigan restaurateur with dining rooms scattered around Detroit, is the genius behind this clubby, atmospheric restaurant at The D (short for, in case you didn’t know, Detroit). Begin with the best complimentary appetizer in Vegas, a Sicilian-style caponata—a mix of eggplant, olives and tomatoes—to be spread on various house breads, among them a delicious focaccia. Then feast on fare such as giant meatballs, potato gnocchi and a lasagna that would do nonna (granny) proud. This is toothsome southern Italian fare with touches from all over Italy, delivered by formally clad servers who minister to your every need. Also, their smartly priced wine list is heavy on Italian reds. In The D, 301 Fremont St., 388-2220.
