Ski season is in full swing! So what are you doing just sitting there? Wax something and go shred the gnar!
Here’s what to expect when you get there.
Las Vegas Ski & Snow Board Resort
There are plenty of reasons to ride local this weekend. Las Vegas Ski & Snowboard Resort quashed reports of an increased avalanche threat due to this summer’s wildfires, so the coast is clear for you to check out the free new drop-in classes being offered on the bunny hill. Experts will be on hand to give pointers to anyone ready to make the jump to the intermediate runs, no reservations necessary. While you’re there, head up to the newly opened Chair 4 rooftop bar for warming drinks and shareable plates of grill fare. The new party yurt doesn’t hurt, either.
Park City, Utah
First off: Congrats. You are about to experience the Greatest Snow on EarthTM. (Yes, they trademarked it.) You have 14 resorts from which to choose in Utah, 11 of them within an hour’s drive from Salt Lake City International Airport. And just 30 minutes away are the three resorts of Park City: Deer Valley, Canyons and Park City Mountain Resort (435-649-8111, ParkCityMountain.com). There you can check out the country’s No 1. terrain park (according to Ski Magazine). The resort is celebrating its 50th anniversary this season, so expect all kinds of fun events and even a locally brewed anniversary ale. If you lunch on the mountain, tuck into bison chili at Summit House (elevation 9,250 feet) or catch spectacular views of Jupiter Peak at Mid-Mountain Lodge. And when you’re ready to après, head up to Deer Valley where you can meat and greet up at the Montage’s newest restaurant, Burgers & Bourbon. Located in the former Apex bar, B&B offers game burgers, an all-American by-the-glass wine list and regional beers. And, of course, bourbon.
The season’s first significant snowfall covered Tahoe South on October 28! New for this season at Heavenly Mountain Resort, at the top of the gondola, the existing zip line has been retrofitted, expanding its Adventure Peak offerings to include a four-lane zip line center, treetop canopy tour and two ropes courses. An additional 3,000-foot zip line is part of Heavenly’s new Epic Discovery program, which is slated to open 2014.
