Concert Review: Jay Z

Mandalay Bay, Dec. 13

What’s the point of buying a seat to a Jay Z show when you don’t sit in it for the duration of his two-hour solo set? The 44-year-old rapper relentlessly delivered hits as he rumbled through almost two decades of singles—ranging from the Indian flutes of “Big Pimpin” to the video game blips of “Tom Ford.” The only break in the action was when producer Timbaland offered a collage of his own hits anchored by an ode to the late Aaliyah an hour into the set. But the breather wasn’t long as Hov raced back out to the stage and punched us in the face with even more madness. Just when it seemed to be over, Jay gave an encore with the song “Encore” and left us with our diamond hand signals in the air. ★★★☆☆
