Who: David Steen

What: Owner and principal designer of Evolve Interiors

I define my style as … elegant, polished and refined. My mother was 47 when I was born, and it was a different era then. It was more of a polished look. She definitely influenced how I dress.

Growing up all I ever wanted to do was … be in interior design. It started when I decorated three rooms at my mother’s house when I was 12—she gave me free rein. Slate blue and rose were popular at the time, and I did my room in three different shades of green. The end result was well received, needless to say.

Regardless of the space, whether traditional or contemporary … my aesthetic is visible. Contrast is important. I like to incorporate both texture and smooth surfaces. I like things that are shiny but still appreciate the variety of adding wood, glass and fabrics.

People don’t always know … what they want when designing a space. It’s hard to see the big picture when you look at a small tile square that’s going to fill a 1,200-square-foot space, for example. I’m not in the business of selling furniture; I create environments for your lifestyle, which sometimes means having fewer choices when decorating a room.
