Concert Review: Pixies

The Joint, Feb. 23

Time has not stood still for one of the most influential bands in modern rock history. In a black T-shirt and shaved head, frontman Black Francis now resembled The Shield’s Michael Chiklis; drummer David Lovering now looked uncannily like former New Jersey Governor John Corzine. But if you closed your eyes, the vocals and guitar chops were as vital as ever. The sound was boosted by the addition of new bassist Paz Lenchantin, who replaced original bass player Kim Deal for this tour. It is a compliment to say Deal’s absence was not noticeable throughout Lenchantin’s seamless performance and background vocals on “Velouria” and “Havalina.” After taking the audience on a satisfying nearly two-hour journey through their extensive catalog, which ranges from thrashing punk to quirky melodic alternative to downright moody post-pop, the Pixies ended the evening with “Planet of Sound” as a single-song encore. ★★★★☆
