Certain holidays and events just stand out in this town. New Year’s Eve and the Super Bowl are among them. Two more take place in March, and this year they both fall in the same week: St. Patrick’s Day, followed three days later by the opening weekend of the NCAA basketball tournament. March Madness indeed!
• For St. Paddy’s, the strategy is simple: Head to any bar with an Irish name. You know, Brendan’s, Rí Rá, J.C. Wooloughan’s, Quinn’s. If you can pick only one, it’d be tough not to choose O’Sheas at the Linq, which is bringing back its St. Paddy’s Day Block Party, running from the 15th through the 17th. The new O’Sheas is a pretty rockin’ joint, and it’s pouring $3 drafts.
Downtown, The D and Golden Gate will have $3 shots of Jameson Irish Whiskey, and both are giving away T-shirts for earning 100 points on slots ($300 coin-in), buying in for $100 on a table game, or betting $100 on live keno at The D. For the same amount of play at the Orleans, you get a whole bottle of Jameson.
• Take two days off work, because it’s tournament time. LVH will host its traditional Hoops Central party, with $2 beers and dogs. South Point’s Hoops Heaven has buckets of six beers for $16 ($2.67 each). At the Orleans, beers will be $2 and dogs $1.50. At the high end, look for viewing parties at Lagasse’s Stadium at Palazzo, The Joint at the Hard Rock Hotel, Hoops & Hops in the new Chelsea at the Cosmopolitan, and a rumored bowling-and-basketball deal at the new Brooklyn Bowl.
If you’re betting the games, one way to make your action last awhile and also have a shot at winning a lot for a little is to enter a contest. Three have been announced: Station Casinos is running the winner-take-all Last Man Standing contest with a $25 entry, with one free when you buy four. William Hill’s Three ’N Out contest is also $25 to enter. And Aliante is running the March Mayhem Bracket Contest, with a $20 entry fee and $5,000 added to the prize pool.
The D will offer the same betting deal for March Madness T-shirts that’s detailed above; LVH requires a $20 parlay wager for a T-shirt; and Arizona Charlie’s will give ’em away for a $20 parlay or $50 straight bet.
