What begins with Lawrence Krauss and Richard Dawkins heading off into a balls-out confrontation with the world of religious belief ends up a buddy road trip with celebrity cameos that include Cameron Diaz, Ricky Gervais and, predictably, Penn Jillette. In The Unbelievers, big ideas are scattershot through a series of scenes from Dawkins and Krauss’ global appearances, and the whole thing ends up feeling more like an atheist’s home movie. Still, while not as viscerally engaging as Bill Maher’s ambushes in Religulous, The Unbelievers does add to the secular movement’s growing public voice and, if you’re listening, makes some compelling arguments.
The Unbelievers is screening at UNLV’s Cox Pavilion on 7:30 p.m. April 3, and will be followed by a Q&A with Dawkins, Krauss and the filmmakers. Tickets are $23-$63. For more information, call 739-3267 or visit UNLVTickets.com.
