Concert Review: ScHoolboy Q

Hard Rock Live, April 4

You don’t go to a ScHoolboy Q show to witness lyrical dexterity. You go to turn the fuck up, as evidenced by the young ladies in booty shorts drinking Four Loko and the couple that kept grinding on each other even while Q—adorned in his John Lennon sunglasses and signature bucket hat—rapped about his smelly socks. Maybe more frightening was that he rapped Bet I got some weed/bet I got your bitch/bet she on her knees/bet she swallow dick to an audience of high school kids. Playing the first of two back-to-back shows that night, Q drifted seamlessly from unhinged party music to dark drug rap and gritty street tales, which is where most of the boppers fell off. They weren’t as down with the “Blind Threats” refrain If God won’t help me this gun will as they were with the I see girls everywhere/Titty, ass, hands in the air hook of hit single “Man of the Year.” Despite the high energy of the sold-out crowd, Q was far more sober and mild than expected. Maybe he saved the drugs for the second show. ★★★✩✩
