Concert Review: Bonobo

Brooklyn Bowl, April 10

Despite being a fan, I had my reservations when it was announced that Bonobo would make a stop in Vegas days before his Coachella performances. Considering our city’s affinity for glow-stick-waving EDM over … well, everything, I wondered if anybody was going to see Bonobo. However, the Brooklyn Bowl filled up nicely when the British producer/DJ/musician took to the stage with a band of four who specialized in a wide range of instruments from bass guitar to clarinet. Call it trip-hop, acid jazz or whatever you please, but Bonobo makes some soul-soothing music. The crowd grooved to the haunting synths and strings of “Kiara” and swooned to female songstress Szjerdene’s heavenly vocals on “First Fire.” It may have been Simon Green’s first Vegas performance in his 15-year musical tenure, but it certainly shouldn’t be his last. ★★★★✩
