Loud Pipes Rev Up to Roar Again

Loud Pipes

Loud Pipes rock Double Down Saloon May 24 and Divebar on June 5

From 2002 until their abrupt silence in 2005 (plus a one-off gig in ’09), local punk-metal powerhouse the Loud Pipes were among my favorite bands. The quintet played full-throttle, riff-tastic songs with a ferocity that bordered on pure chaos. Now the group is reuniting for the simple pleasure of kicking rock ’n’ roll in its indie-sissified ass.

Husband-and-wife team Jesse (guitar) and Roxie (bass) Amoroso always served as the core of the Pipes. But after letting that engine idle, they went on to form hard-rock acts Pigasus and Crazy Chief, and take over vintage instrument and gear shop Cowtown Guitars. But now Vegas’ premier rock couple wants to crank things up again in terms of volume, speed and aggression. Translation: Brace yourself for songs such as “Kill Holiday.”

“There’s a lull right now, and we want to provide a jolt,” Jesse says. “We’re all punk rockers, that’s where we come from, and the stagnancy feels like an opportunity.”

The Pipes stood out with their rock ’n’ roll edges and stinging guitar solos. The current lineup has Gilbert Estrada on drums and Tony Lopez on mic, the only changeup being Dave Post (from local punk ensemble the Mapes) on second guitar.

“We made [Loud Pipes] T-shirts,” Roxie says. “So you know we’re serious this time around.”

The Pipes re-debut at 10 p.m. May 24 at Double Down Saloon with Neutral Boy, Boston’s OC45, Grit & Gold, Hell Fish, Common Tongue and Matt Charette. They fire it up again at 10 p.m. June 5 at Divebar with Nashville Pussy. In other Amoroso  news, Roxie opens vintage clothing boutique Exile on Main Street (1007 S. Main St., next to Cowtown), June 6. Social Distortion’s Jonny “2 Bags” Wickersham will perform.

Demon Lung update: The psychedelic-doom quintet is writing the final tracks for a sophomore release on the Candlelight Records label. Once again, the band has hitched its sonic wagon to metal-engineering legend Billy Anderson (Sleep, Neurosis), who will produce the album in Portland, Oregon, in July in time for an early 2015 release.
