Rare Respect From Reno

In noticing that the Reno Gazette-Journal’s Chris Murray had written about UNLV football August 20, we immediately assumed that the sports columnist had gone out of his way to rancorously denounce every conceivable thing about the Rebels, as is the custom up north. So imagine our surprise as we read Murray describing this year’s UNLV football team as “a likeable group” and “a team worth rooting for,” using terms such as “loyal” and “admirable”—with nary a hint of sarcasm. Praising UNLV for banding together in the wake of offseason setbacks couldn’t have endeared Murray to his regular readers, but Rebels fans can surely appreciate the rare friendly fire coming from enemy territory. Maybe someday we’ll return the favor … someday.
