Chef Beni Velazquez is putting the finishing touches on his new restaurant, Latin Fish, in the Desert Shores location that previously housed Garfield’s. As he proudly told guests while spooning out seafood paella at last week’s Taste of the Nation dine-around at Rain in the Palms, the chef best known for his work at Arts District favorite Bar + Bistro will offer the small plates and Latin fusion style for which he’s acclaimed, but with a concentration on seafood.
“The flavor profiles are going to be what I think people expect from what I do,” the chef says. “The new cool stuff, that will be mostly seafood, and all sustainable. We’re gonna do some really cool stuff with crab and lobster. And I’m looking for fish that are used in Latin-style dishes.” Other plans include a variety of ceviches and a selection of sangrias.
Velazquez says he was inspired to concentrate on seafood when he saw the restaurant’s waterfront location, which reminded him of time spent in Marina Del Rey. “I want to make it a cool place where people can hang out and feel like they’re actually at a resort,” he says.
Latin Fish is scheduled to open its doors the first week of November, although there will likely be a soft opening sometime before that.
