As a kid, I never found Journey all that compelling, but over the last 30 years I’ve eaten enough of the their radio-friendly rock candy to be won over, or at least to give in. They kicked off their nine-show residency with “Anyway You Want It,” and gave it everything they had without flagging or slacking. I was singing along to hits such as “Wheel in the Sky” and Heavy Metal soundtrack power ballad “Open Arms.”

Founding members Neal Schon and Ross Valory have done a great job of finding replacement talent over the years. The most impressive is vocalist Arnel Pineda whose journey took him from the backstreets of Manila to the front of a stage mobbed by fist-pumping fans. He pegs the signature sound and seems to have won over older die-hard fans who are now willing to agree with him when he sings “Change for the Better.”
