The name A.R. Rahman would not jump off most Americans’ tongues if they were asked to name one of the great composers of contemporary popular music. His 144 film composition credits do not include include films in English—he pulled two Oscars for Slumdog Millionaire. Still, it doesn’t matter if you are familiar with Indian cinema or if you speak Hindi, Tamil, Urdu or French, all of which Rahman has used in his compositions. His work is so evocative, so varied and sometimes so daring that you are happy to be swept away by the grandeur of music from The Hundred-Foot Journey; or bop to the playful, electric sensuality of cuts from O Kadhal Kanmani (2015); or fall to the slow transcendent ambience of tracks such as “Mirage (Warriors in Peace).” Rahman pens songs from everywhere and for everyone. ★★★★✩
