Fall Out Boy and Wiz Khalifa Fall Flat

So, what the hell do these two acts—a weed-loving rapper, and a pop rock band—have in common? Two things: Wiz Khalifa rapped on the remix of Fall Out Boy’s “Uma Thurman,” and both relied on over-the-top production to make up for sloppy co-headlining performances on their Boys of Zummer tour.

Wiz Khalifa took the stage first, appearing as a ragdoll in both appearance and stage presence. Dressed in a white T-shirt and white jeans, the Pittsburgh rapper shook his dreadlocks and took exaggerated struts across the stage while performing hits such as “Black and Yellow” and “We Dem Boyz.” Khalifa tried rallying the audience via a call-and-response but as the music cut out, his attempts were met with silence. His performance relied heavily on gimmicks, and that became all the more obvious when he tossed two giant, inflatable blunts into the audience during “Young, Wild and Free,” and struggled to sing along to the chorus. He then brought out Taylor Gang associate Chevy Woods and Three 6 Mafia founder Juicy J, who rapped their songs without ploys and proved to be much more entertaining. The set climaxed when all three simply rapped and danced to “You and Your Friends.”

The 808 drums turned into feedback-ridden guitars when Fall Out Boy hit the stage. Bassist Pete Wentz jumped and spun like a top while playing the syncopated bass lick of “Dance Dance” while frontman Patrick Stump channeled his inner Michael Jackson with hip gyrations and vocal trills. Andy Hurley banged through the arena-rock drums of “I Don’t Care” while performing on a gaudy staircase made of LCD screens. But pyrotechnics synced with the flashy images did little to deter from a messy performance. This was exemplified during a brief acoustic set on a small stage on top of the soundboard, which was full of sour notes. Fans’ confused glances during the two-song interlude made it apparent that beyond stunts, this mixed bag of a tour lacked substance. ★★✩✩✩
