It’s Time for Basketball, Hello Kitty and Horses

A curated guide to this week in your city

Thursday, Aug. 13

Basketball in August? Oh, yeah. The USA Basketball Men’s National Team is holding its annual Blue vs. White showcase, 7:30 p.m. at the Thomas & Mack Center. Come watch some of the NBA’s biggest stars battle it out as they continue to vie for a spot on the 2016 U.S. Olympic team.

Friday, Aug. 14

This one’s so sweet it makes our teeth hurt: Hello Kitty’s Supercute Friendship Festival is today through Sunday at the Orleans Arena. You get live performances, fashion shows, photo ops, merch—the whole package. If you aren’t already a Sanrio fan, you might want to skip this total-immersion experience.

Saturday, Aug. 15

Do you love books so much you could eat them? Probably not, because you’d get sick. Nevertheless, the folks at Henderson’s Gibson Library have a little project for you bookworms: It’s their annual Edible Book Contest. You make something out of food that references a book title or literary character, take it to the library and see how you stack up against other bibliophiles. Or just go and gawk.

If you haven’t visited Cashman Field for a Las Vegas 51s game this summer, your opportunities are dwindling. Why not spend the evening at the ballpark as the hometown boys—they’re in first place, you know—face the Iowa Cubs? First pitch is 7:05 p.m.

Monday, Aug. 17

Mondays are a bummer. Here’s how to wash away the pain: Dive In Movies at the Cosmopolitan, which transforms its outdoor Boulevard pool into a floating theater by playing movies on their big, beautiful screen. Plus drinks. Tonight’s double feature: Clueless and Breakfast at Tiffany’s. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.; showtime is at 7.

Tuesday, Aug. 18

What would happen if you turned three celebrity chefs loose in a McDonald’s kitchen? We have no idea, but it sounds interesting, possibly delicious, and it’s happening at 6 p.m. at the McDonald’s at 6990 S. Rainbow Blvd. It’s called Appetite for the Arches, and it’s a fundraiser for the Ronald McDonald House of Las Vegas. Tickets are $45.

In the world of cutting horses, this week is a big deal. In fact, it’s The Mane Event, which kicked off yesterday and continues through Aug. 23 at the South Point Arena and Equestrian Center. Cutting horses dance, prance and turn on a dime. Combine cutting competitions with parties and a Western exhibition, and you’ve got a down-home good time.
