Everybody Can-Can!

Our latest, local crushes

Increasingly, canned suds don’t mean Coors Light and “Dad beer.” Oskar Blues led the way starting in 2002, and now craft breweries such as New Belgium and Brooklyn Brewery have started canning their brews. Henderson’s Bad Beat Brewing will follow suit in the fall starting with its Bluffing Isn’t Weiss Hefeweizen, and look for Tenaya Creek brews in cans once its new location opens near Downtown. But you don’t have to wait until then to get some local brews in crushable, recyclable cans. Now, who wants to shotgun?

big_dogs_watch_dog_tangerine_wit_can_WEBNo bottle opener is needed to crack open a Big Dog’s Tangerine Wit. Mobile canning company Mobile West Canning comes to the Big Dog’s Brewing Co. facility to can freshly brewed Big Dog’s beers—40 per minute, to be exact. This hazy unfiltered Wit is pale yellow with a rich, creamy head. The medium-bodied beer smells and tastes like fresh tangerines, and is crisp and dry with a slightly tart finish. 5 percent ABV, 16 ounces, $7 per four-pack, Total Wine & More in Henderson, BigDogsBrews.com.

crafthaus_evocation_saison_can_WEBHenderson’s CraftHaus has also started canning with Mobile West and launched two of its flagship brews, Evocation Saison and Resinate IPA, in May. Evocation is especially unique since saisons are not typically canned. The light-bodied brew is crisp, fruity and slightly spicy, with hints of lemon and hops. You can find CraftHaus’ canned brews in 16-ounce four-packs around the Valley. 4.7 percent ABV, $9, Total Wine & More, CraftHausBrewery.com.

joseph_james_citra_rye_can_WEBSouthern Nevada’s only brewery with an in-house canning line, Joseph James Brewing Co. cans most of its beers, Citra Rye Pale Ale being among the best sellers. The American pale ale gives off citrus zest and subtle pine notes, culminating in a spicy, dry finish. The golden brew is made with Citra hops, malt and rye, making it more hoppy than your typical pale ale, but sweeter than an IPA—smooth and easy to drink. Plus, you can make your out-of-state friends jealous because, unlike other Joseph James cans, Citra Rye is only available in Nevada. Well, at least until fall. 5.5 percent ABV, 12-ounce, $10 per six-pack, Total Wine & More, FoxBrews.com.
