With the NFL season now in Week 6, I’ve had time to check out lots of football-related promotions. Good parties and food-and-drink bargains can be found all over town, but some casinos and bars have also concocted deals specifically for gamblers. These tend to be unadvertised, so if you want to take advantage, you have to discover them on your own … or read about them here.
For starters, there’s always value in playing any freebie contest you come across that pays a weekly prize. That includes Boyd’s Pick the Pros, Station Casinos’ Gridiron Glory and Rampart’s Red Zone to Riches, along with the smaller kiosk contests at Ellis Island, Aliante, Hard Rock and Silver Sevens. Perhaps the best of them runs at the Longhorn on Boulder Highway, where you play against a payout schedule rather than other players. Anyone with a perfect card shares a $1,000 prize, one miss pays $500, two misses $300, three misses $200 and four misses gets dinner for two. There’s no risk, and you have a pretty good shot of at least getting fed. You’ll also find free weekly contests at the two O’Aces ($200 prize) and Irene’s ($100) bars.
Only the Westgate and Mesquite’s Casablanca and Virgin River are offering reduced juice this year. Both offer -105 lines (as opposed to the standard -110) on Thursdays, a concession that drops the casino edge on a straight wager from 4.5 percent to 2.4 percent. It’s offered from 3 p.m. to closing at Westgate and from noon to 4 p.m. in Mesquite.
Buy any burger at Umami in SLS and get a free $5 parlay from William Hill for the Thursday- or Monday-night game. The exact value of the free roll depends on which parlay you play, but $4 is close, which drops your theoretical burger cost to about $8.
Wild Wild West and Wildfire Valley View run a creative promotion in which you get a square on a Monday Night Football board for hitting a natural 4-of-a-kind any time during the week before the game. Each square is worth $2.50, which has the effect of raising the return on any quarter video poker game you play by about .5 percent.
The Mardi Gras has an even better video poker promo on Monday nights. Whenever a touchdown is scored, a countdown strobe goes off and flashes for five minutes. Hit a natural 4-of-a-kind while the light’s on and get a $25 bonus. The best 25-cent schedule at the Mardi Gras bar is 6/5 Bonus Poker. Not great, but the theoretical return on the game during those five minutes is 101.60 percent.
At Aliante, get a $5 matchplay when you make a $40 straight bet or a $20 parlay. The expected loss on a $40 straight wager is $1.80 (less than the cost of a $20 parlay) and the expected win on the matchplay is $2.70. You’re scalping ’em for 90 cents! You have to take those deals where you can get ’em.
