Crime Boss

Whitney Bansin, chief visionary for Crimes of Beauty, an apparel, accessories, and swag company featuring tongue-in-cheek sayings

How long have you been working for yourself? Since graduating from UNLV, I started my first business One Luv Agency for hair/makeup and body painting, then shortly after opened One Luv Bridal, focusing on hair and makeup for weddings. More recently, I opened One Luv Cosmetics. I have not worked for anyone since I was 19. With $62 billion in annual cosmetic retail sales in the U.S. alone, there is always a market for new products, business ventures and media.

Where did the idea for Crimes of Beauty originate?

It all started when I saw a tank top that said “I eat glitter for breakfast.” I thought it was the funniest thing I had ever seen. I knew I had to buy it. That day I wore it out as [my husband and I] ran errands. I had close to 10 people stop me and say that they loved my shirt and they thought it was so funny. When we got home I made an announcement to my dazed husband that we should start another business and put funny beauty-specific sayings on apparel. He was skeptical, as he is with all my crazy entrepreneurial ideas, but he gave me the green light. He even came up with the name Crimes
of Beauty.

What advice would you give to other women considering opening a beauty business in Las Vegas?

Focus on the business side just as much as the beauty side. At the end of the day, in order for a business to survive it needs to be profitable. It’s not only important for the business owner to keep up with beauty trends and products, but to also integrate into your business talented lawyers, accountants, consultants and anyone else who can help keep you organized, protected and on track.

What are your growth and expansion plans?

Crimes of Beauty will launch in 2016 at two of the biggest beauty trade shows in the U.S. We will be debuting our second collection featuring new apparel and accessories. We are looking to expand our collection to offer multiple clothing styles. Our canvas bags have such a huge following that we decided to expand this item for personal use, travel and on-the-go. We also hope to expand into in-store and online beauty retailers by the beginning of 2017.
