Last month, on a yet-summery night, I made the journey from Downtown to the deep Southwest at the invitation of Other Mama chef-owner Dan Krohmer. It was time for the seafood-focused neighborhood spot to swap out some of its summery cocktails for more fall-inspired ones. Up for grabs, four or five spots on the new menu, and in the running, eight cocktails by barmen David English and Dave Cooper. In the end, four out of four of my top picks made it on the menu, as well as a fifth wild card. So needless to say, I know where I’ll be doing my drinking this fall. In keeping with Other Mama’s tradition of naming its cocktails for women, I give you the city’s newest leading ladies, from left to right:
Zapopan Tequila, oloroso sherry, gentian liqueur, thyme-infused agave nectar, lemon juice, gooseberries and smoked alder salt, $12.
Gruven Vodka, Sohomaru “Heart and Soul” Sake, lime, house-made arctic blueberry shrub, shiso leaf, Bar Keep Fennel Bitters, $10.
Dickel Rye, Snap Gingersnap Liqueur, housemade vermouth and Australian Bitters, $12.
Alipus Mezcal, pear liqueur, lemon juice and rosemary simple syrup, $12.
Kikori Japanese Whiskey, Drambuie, Ancho Reyes, lemon juice and Peychaud’s Bitters, $12.
