Talented local drummers were given the spotlight at the Luxor October 15 as part of the Blue Man Group’s first-ever drum-off competition.
Ten semifinalists, selected through video submissions, were invited to the hotel’s Blue Man Theater to compete for a spot in the October 22 finals at Downtown Container Park. Contestants were given two minutes to drum their hearts out and impress the panel of judges, which will be joined by Ronnie Vannucci, drummer for The Killers, during the live drum-off finale.
Finalist Charles Taylor started the competition off with a bang, as he gave a high-powered performance featuring plenty of crowd-pleasing moves, from drumstick twirling to playing with closed eyes. Following him was 13-year-old Alexey Poblete, who is already a social media sensation and member of the all-female rock band Moxy and The Influence. One of the most entertaining drummers to watch, Poblete exuded confidence beyond her years and expressed sheer joy during her inspired performance. The teen seems destined for stardom, as she was selected for Gap’s Girl Empowerment ad campaign, spearheaded by Ellen DeGeneres, in 2015.
Fellow contestant Joey Gibbs, current drummer for threeAMproject and former member of Mindset Evolution, also put on a spectacular show that left the judges wanting more. “All that for two minutes?!” he exclaimed at the end of his set, which seemed to reflect the thoughts of everyone present in the room.
Don’t miss the chance to see Taylor, Poblete, Gibbs and two other finalists show off their talents at this weekend’s event, in which the winner will receive more than $6,000 in prizes, including a new DW drum kit and VIP meet-and-greet tickets to the Blue Man Group show.
