Downtown has finally added Indian cuisine to its culinary repertoire, but it’s a more modern and refined version than you’ll find almost anywhere else in Las Vegas. Turmeric is a collaboration between brothers-in-law Rajesh Patel and Ritesh Patel, who are also the team behind Saffron Flavors of India and Curry Leaf Flavors of India, respectively.
The small menu offers the sophisticated flavor blends and elegant presentations you’d expect in a fine dining restaurant. They include appetizers such as grilled eggplant with a peanut and sesame crust accompanied by the strained yogurt dish labne, and a “bomba” of slow-cooked lamb folded into croquettes of crispy seasoned potatoes. For vegetarians, about a third of the appetizers and entrées are meat-free, as are all of the side dishes. And the sorbet-like mango kulfi dessert should not be missed.
If you don’t see what you want, feel free to ask. The chefs are under instructions to prepare any of the dishes from either of its sister restaurants, as long as the kitchen isn’t too busy for off-the-menu indulgences.
Sitting on a busy intersection directly across the street from Container Park, the more casual front dining room (with bar) and the upstairs patio lounge are prime spots for people watching and basking in the energy of Downtown. The rear dining room, however, offers a quieter atmosphere. That variety makes this a good spot for any occasion, from a business lunch or romantic date night to raucous partying.
