Sometimes a drink is more than just a drink, as when serious artwork is involved in the packaging. Such is the case of the Hennessy V.S Limited Edition Series, which contracts internationally renowned artists to design striking images for its label and packaging. The latest rendition, hitting the shelves worldwide on June 12, features the work of JonOne, a self-taught artist who progressed from his days tagging New York City subway cars to becoming one of the pioneers of abstract graffiti.
Born in the Dominican Republic, John Andrew Perello (a.k.a. JonOne) grew up in Harlem during the heyday of graffiti art, where the streets became his canvas. His early work has been classified as “freestyle street art,” but he has evolved into painting on canvas and is known for the use of vibrant colors and refined abstract renderings. The celebrated artist’s pieces are exhibited in Miami, NYC, Singapore, London and in Paris, where he has lived since the 1980s.
For his design for Hennessy, JonOne used only primary colors, applying layer upon layer of splashes of color, symbolic of the layers of flavors and aromas Hennessy’s master blender creates during the making of this renowned Cognac. JonOne also incorporated some of Hennessy’s imagery, including 1765, the year the Cognac distillery was founded by Richard Hennessy.
As for the classic spirit contained in the iconic-shaped bottle, Hennessy V.S is one of the most famous Cognacs in the world. The V.S stands for very special and it is a blend of eaux-de-vie (brandy made from fruit) hailing from all six Cognac growing regions: Grande Champagne, Borderies, Petite Champagne, Fins Bois, Bons Bois and Bois Ordinaires, and is aged in Limousin oak barrels between 2½ to 5 years.
As this is a limited edition, it won’t be around too long. Look for it at Total Wine, XO Liquor and Speakeasy Liquor. The suggested retail price is $34.
