Sweets to Beat the Heat

The days of soda bars are long gone but candy stores are more alive than ever—soda pop included.

Diet be damned, Pawn Stars star Chumlee is capitalizing on his sweet tooth. On June 22, he opened Chumlee’s Candy on the Blvd in Pawn Plaza, the outdoor mall located next to the popular Gold & Silver Pawn Shop, where the show is filmed. Getting distracted by sugary treats while waiting out the long lines to get into the store is a sweet idea. Here’s a look at Chumlee’s new candy digs, plus two more in case Downtown isn’t on the agenda.

Chumlee’s Candy on the Blvd

Sweetheart Chumlee and his brother Sage have brought the sweets to Pawn Plaza. Classic candy store vibes include a variety of saltwater taffy, bulk candies and a few selections of soda. They also have a span of Pez dispensers ranging from Star Wars to Pokémon for collectors out there. The shop’s currently open Wednesday through Sunday, so Chumlee can be there to help run it as well as take on challengers in a game of Beanboozled. Go quick though, because hours are expected to change. Pawn Plaza, 725 Las Vegas Blvd. South, Wed.–Sun. Noon–5 p.m., chumleescandy.com

Rocket Fizz

Rocket Fizz, located near The Lakes, offers a retro feel from the moment of arrival. From old tin signs and a collection of knick knacks, the shop has a wide variety of sodas with flavors such as Seal Ya Later, a cola labeled after Osama Bin Laden and honey lemonade, mixing sweet and sour for potential relief from this heat. There’s also a long list of taffy, including a chicken and waffle flavor. Here’s to hoping that’s more waffle than chicken. Village Square, 9410 W. Add sugar high to Friday night’s plans at It’Sugar  It’s no mom and pop, but it still has all of the offerings to satiate a candy craving tenfold. And with multiple locations around town, accessibility is a non issue. Novelty candy and popular bites are on hand, but if the crazy pants are on, opt for a 5-pound gummy bear, 3-pound gummy worm or, the ultimate rush, an 8-foot-long, 26-pound gummy python.
