Drag Race Season 9 Contestants Shine in War on the Catwalk at House of Blues

Farrah Moan

The six contestants of Season 9 of RuPaul’s Drag Race who headlined War on the Catwalk on August 13 at House of Blues at Mandalay Bay—host Trinity Taylor, winner Sasha Velour, Shea Couleé, Farrah Moan of Las Vegas, Nina Bo’nina Brown and Alexis Michelle—have a number of things in common, besides being fierce drag queens.

For Velour, Couleé and Michelle, it was their first time in Las Vegas. All three have their own unique and trademark styles, and each had a strong fan base at HOB. The trio certainly pleased Drag Race fans during a two and a half-hour show (with 20-minute intermission) that was hilarious and fabulous (and a welcome diversion from the weekend atrocities in Charlottesville, Virginia).

Catwalk’s runway rundown: The star of the evening was avid plastic surgery fan Taylor, whose off-the-cuff comedic timing (of credit cards, she said, “I’m made of plastic—I don’t accept it!”; “I’m a Barbie with balls”) was as impeccable as her multiple wardrobe changes. Velour dazzled with artsy and dramatic performances to Annie Lennox’s “Precious” and Kesha’s “Praying.”

Couleé was sexy and high-energy, starting with Beyoncé’s “Partition” and ending with her own song, “Cocky.” Hometown girl Moan, the youngest queen, ahem, by far, was a pin-up queen and showgirl with Christina Aguilera’s “Mercy on Me” and Kylie Minogue’s “Get Outta My Way.”

Michelle was a reality-TV and Broadway-inspired diva portraying Kris Jenner and Liza Minnelli; her resemblance to both is uncanny. And a surprisingly funny Brown, the evening’s other scene-stealer, slayed with Lana Del Rey’s “Cola,” Whitney Houston’s “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” and her uproarious self-aware humor (“Ssshhh! Ssshhh! Ssshhh! Do you hear that? Them hoes are talking about me!”)

Broadway and entertainment darling Todrick Hall (Season 9 guest judge and choreographer) was brought onstage with his entourage, and the evening ended with a sassy Q&A. Who’s ready for Season 10? Yaaasss, RuPaul, yaaasss!
