On September 30, Northwest Las Vegas community Skye Canyon hosts its inaugural Chalk + Cheers art fair and juried art competition. With the goal to support healthy, active lifestyles, the event is open to the entire Valley in order to celebrate the local art scene.
Skye Canyon called out to artists to create pieces along the theme of “Base Camp for the Great Outdoors” within one of the following categories for high school student, university student/amateur artist and professional artist divisions: Nevada landscapes, outdoor sports and abstract outdoor. Cash prizes will be awarded to winners, including a $500 People’s Choice Award, which will be selected by event attendees.
Chalk + Cheers will also host a fundraising event, Cheers for Charity, supporting New Vista, a local nonprofit that supports intellectually challenged individuals. The fundraiser includes six stations offering cocktails, beer and wine, with all proceeds benefiting the charity. There will also be treats from local food trucks, an art vendor fair, a freestyle chalk-art area, face painting and live art by former Red Rock Canyon artist in residence Norah S. Siller. Other artists will also be on hand to dedicate purchased artwork.
The event takes place from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., while artists have from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. to complete their works. The jury will then review the pieces, with contest winners announced at 5 p.m. The chalk-art competition was limited to 45 entries.
