Christmas in November

It’s a well-known and reliable rule of thumb that the holiday season is prime time for bargain hunters in Las Vegas. Every year, beginning right around now, casinos, restaurants, bars and other businesses begin unveiling their promotions. It’s early, and the juiciest of the gambling and drinking deals (last year Todd English P.U.B. ran the “12 Beers of Christmas”) haven’t been announced, so I can’t give you the specifics in these categories. However, several of the traditional free holiday events have already declared and are opening this month. Christmas isn’t just for December anymore.

A (Bar) Key to Success

A bar key is a community key that can be used to log in any player who doesn’t have his own. The bartender activates your machine with his bar key, and you’re qualified for the bonus. Most bartenders will log you in without a thought. Some, however, will ask (or even insist) that you join the club, in which case you can decide for yourself if it’s worth the effort. It usually is, because then you might also get mail with additional offers from the bar. But if you don’t feel like filling out paperwork at that moment, or it’s a place you almost never go to, then asking for the key is the next best thing you can do before playing.

No Phony Coney

For years, there were three primary Coney Islands in Detroit—Senate on Michigan Avenue, and two in the middle of downtown, standing side by side on Lafayette Avenue: Lafayette and American. The two downtown were always considered the best, and now we have one of them in Las Vegas! It’s the first time American has gone outside of Michigan.

A secret Showcase, Monster Ham and Super Sours

I finally made it to Wonderground, the magicians’ showcase held every third Thursday of the month in the Olive restaurant at 3850 E. Sunset Road. This is another of those “secret” entertainment plays, a la the Vegas Underground on Mondays at the Tap House or the Lon Bronson gigs on Friday nights at Green Valley Ranch.

A Princely Discount on Mac King

For years now I’ve had a go-to show that covers 95 percent of these situations. It’s the Mac King Comedy Magic Show at Harrah’s. Without spending my space on a review, I can tell you that this recommendation produces an extremely high satisfaction rate, given the contents and quality of the show. It’s funny, clever and clean—and the magic is good. I’ve almost never heard a complaint about Mac. So let’s get to the deal.

That Old Vegas Charm—in Reno!

Reno’s tourist core is kind of like a big downtown Las Vegas, with several casinos located all in one area and within walking distance of one another. There are some fancier places—Peppermill and Atlantis—a few miles up the road, but for the most part, going to Reno means hanging out in the downtown area at Harrah’s, Cal Neva, Eldorado, Silver Legacy and Siena, among others, and there are some awesome deals to be had.

The Bite of the Bacchanal

On top of the great grub, Bacchanal Buffet is also a bona fide culinary happening, given the spectacle of it all and the reality that this may be the best buffet in Las Vegas history. So, yes, even at the recently raised prices, I’d still call it a deal. But you’d better get there before they raise ‘em again—this baby’s good enough that they might get away with it.
