Deanna Rilling

Calendar Editor/Nightlife Writer/Concert Coordinator

Contact: Email

As a self-proclaimed "pseudosocialite" who isn't afraid to rock comfortable shoes or the same outfit twice at Vegas hot spots, Deanna Rilling has been involved in the electronic dance music and local indie rock scene for over 12 years. She typically gets at least one drink spilled on her a night when out and about and usually gets her feet stepped on as well, but it's all in a day's work and she wouldn't have it any other way.

Concert Review: Erykah Badu

Thomas & Mack Center, April 6

Oh, on and on … and on and on, we kept waiting for Erykah Badu to sing a song. Energy was high at the Las Vegas Soul Fest thanks to sets by SWV (their harmonies were as sweet as when they first emerged on the scene), 68-year old legend Lenny Williams (he sexually charged the room) and Joe (the ladies nearly pulled him off stage).

His groundbreaking three-year Perfecto residency at Rain changed the game as we know it, including the electronic dance music that now commands the prime-time slot, instilling the idea of a costumed cast of performers hanging from the ceiling and even allowing the previously taboo glow sticks back into the club.

Las Vegas Academy of the Arts Celebrates 20 Years

The Las Vegas Academy of the Arts has been honored with 10 Grammys—a first for any school in the country. One of the institution’s guitar ensembles performed at the National Guitar Association, and jazz studies students have won the Reno Jazz Festival and performed at the Monterey Jazz Festival. The school has an award-winning Mariachi ensemble, and has been invited to perform at the Thespian International Festival in Lincoln, Nebraska. LVA student artwork hangs at the educational wing at the Congressional Building in Washington, D.C. Add a Distinguished Magnet School of America nod and a five-star rating in the district, and it’s fair to say, 20 years after the school was founded, that the LVA experiment has worked.
