Rogers Foundation donation to the Black Mountain Institute

Certain aspects of UNLV always get their fair share of attention: the basketball team, the prospect of a medical school, plans for a new football stadium. While all those entities crowd the airwaves, UNLV’s Black Mountain Institute is quietly poised to do great things in the literary world, thanks in large part to a $20 million gift from the Rogers Foundation, which followed a $10 million check the foundation wrote to the institute back in 2013. The funding will go toward helping UNLV (specifically) and Las Vegas (in general) become a national, and even global, literary mecca. At a time when the political discourse seems to be all about cutting the humanities in favor of majors that offer nothing more than career development, this is welcome and inspiring news, indeed.
