Sonia Anderson has always known the value of an education. Having grown up in impoverished South America, Anderson emigrated at 18, earned degrees in computer science and accounting, then worked her way up the world of corporate finance. Now she imparts the values of academic and financial literacy to thousands of Southern Nevada youth through Andson, Inc., which she launched herself. The organization, which celebrates its fifth anniversary this year, offers free tutoring by Clark County School District teachers to low-income K-12 students at more than 20 sites across the Valley. At a time when there’s so much talk about solving our education woes but very little in the way of tangible results, Anderson is a shining example of the old idiom that actions speak louder than words.
