Much like the Valley in general, our television market is a transient one, rarely yielding longtime news anchors. But occasionally, years of daily newscasts, breaking-news coverage, election nights and community involvement accumulate, and before viewers realize it, an institution is born. Going into her 10th year here, Denise Valdez is 8 News Now’s noon, 4 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. anchor, and last month she collected her second Emmy in the Pacific Southwest Region for anchoring. Valdez’s zeal for delivering reliable local news is perhaps exceeded only by her love for animals: Not only does she support several animal-rescue groups, but she created a popular segment called “Pet Project.”
