Common Core may dominate the conversation about education, but the Las Vegas Philharmonic is singing a different tune. Recognizing that music is just as important as math, science and language arts, the Phil’s Youth Concert Series strives to give as many students in Clark County School District the opportunity to experience classical music in a concert hall setting. In the last 16 years, more than 200,000 students—75 percent of whom go to at-risk elementary schools—have attended a daytime concert at The Smith Center created especially for them. And to give context to what they’re hearing, Philharmonic music director Donato Cabrera creates a curriculum guide for teachers. This is how you change lives, one musical note at a time. 702-258-5438, LVPhil.org.
